2020 has been a year of enormous challenges for everyone.  In response to the economic upheaval created by the pandemic, there have been significant changes in both federal and state law including (among others) changes to state and federal family leave laws as well as additional protective measures and policies intended to mitigate the health and economic effects of the pandemic on employers and employees. 

In addition, there have been notable changes in employment law that are unrelated to the pandemic. For example, California’s controversial AB 5 went into effect on January 1, limiting employers’ ability to classify workers as “independent contractors.”  It is critical for employees and employers alike to be aware of these changes.
